Heard this segment by the Loh Down on Science on NPR this morning on my drive to school. Doctors at Northwestern University conducted an experiment on the effect of music as a pain medication for children in replace of opioid medication. In this experiment there were three groups all listening to different things. The first group the children got to choose their music, the second group listened to an audiobook, and the third group listened to white noise as the control group. Researchers found that children who listened to music and stories experienced less pain after major and minor surgeries! How amazing is that. What can we do with this knowledge? Does this same experiment hold true with adults? It's interesting to think about the potential of music therapy and its effects on us.
What would you listen to in order to relieve some pain?
